IPSec

IPSec stands for IP Security. It was developed by the IETF to ensure secure communication at the IP layer. IPSec is widely used in VPN.

At a highlevel, IPSec is a framework comprising of open standards to provide secure communication over IP networks. This is achieved by using cryptographic security.
